PFAS

What it means

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — a large family of human-made chemicals used to make things resistant to water, grease, and stains. You’ll find them in everything from nonstick pans and waterproof jackets to food packaging and firefighting foam.

Why it matters

PFAS don’t easily break down, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” They’ve been detected in soil, water, wildlife, and even human blood, and some are linked to health risks like immune and hormonal disruption.

Certifications to look out for:

Intertek has a PFAS Free Certification, which validates the absence in textiles, food packaging, personal care products and other consumer goods.

NSF has a new certification: PFAS-Fre Products for NOnfood Compounds and Food Equipment Materials.

Finch tip: Choose PFAS-free cookware, clothing, and cosmetics whenever possible, and look for brands that clearly state “no PFAS” or “fluorine-free.”
